AIKOU
LEADERSHIP ADVISORY
Built from inside consequential work.
Aikou Leadership Advisory brings together two bodies of experience: operating leadership in high-consequence environments and the practice of helping leaders, teams and organisations develop.
That combination shapes a simple conviction: leadership development only matters if it remains useful when the work becomes difficult.

Why Aikou.
Leading engineering and operational teams in mining and heavy industry meant making decisions and carrying accountability amid technical risk, competing priorities, weak interfaces, unclear authority and systems that did not always fit the work.
Years spent developing leaders and teams, alongside the founder's own developmental journey, brought a different understanding: how leadership capacity grows, how perspectives change, and what it takes to develop the ability to work with greater complexity, uncertainty and consequence.
Aikou was created to bring those two realities together.
Our Purpose.
To strengthen leadership capacity and capability, and the organisational conditions that enable leaders and teams to see clearly, make sound decisions and act responsibly when the consequences matter.
Radically human, grounded in reality.
Aikou meets people and organisations with care, presence, empathy and respect, helping create the trust needed for honest conversation, meaningful development and responsible action.
"Safe enough for honesty, clear enough for reality, compassionate enough for development, accountable enough for change."
Renier (Ren) Smit.
Founder and Director, Aikou Leadership Advisory
Ren brings more than three decades of experience across mining and heavy industry in South Africa and Australia.
His operating career spans statutory engineering accountability, enterprise engineering and asset strategy, maintenance and reliability, major capital delivery, underground and multi-site operations, technical governance, operational recovery and serious-incident investigation.
In South Africa, he served as lead investigator for a longwall fatality investigation.
The leadership practice.
Alongside his operating and enterprise career, Ren has developed a leadership practice spanning individual leaders, executive and operational teams, succession, culture and organisational change.
A developmental perspective across the full arc.
Aikou's work is informed by the full arc of adult leadership development, from foundational capacities to increasingly complex, systemic and integrative forms of leadership.
Development is shaped by the leader's current capacities and the demands of their role, not by an expectation that everyone should progress through every developmental level.
The work considers both Structure and State: what leaders have developed the capacity to understand and work with, and what remains accessible when pressure rises. It also examines the relationships and organisational conditions that shape leadership effectiveness.
Grounded in established disciplines.
The practice draws on adult development, leadership and complexity theory, organisational and relational psychology, systems thinking, High-Reliability Organisation theory and psychological safety.
Aikido philosophy also informs the work through its emphasis on presence, balance, relationship and constructive engagement with conflict.
Established assessments and developmental practices are used where they add evidence or strengthen the work.
No single framework defines Aikou. The methods are not the product.
A practice that became an architecture.
Over time, a recurring question became harder to ignore: why can capable leaders, strong teams and apparently sound organisational systems still struggle to use what they know when the situation tightens?
Aikou EHL™ grew from that inquiry.
It brings together developmental, relational, organisational and systemic perspectives to help Aikou understand the leader, leadership collective and wider organisation together, and determine where development may be needed.
